CHARLOTTE
Belinda was doing coke? Oooh,
she is in so much trouble.
KATHY
Well, she claims that she wasn’t.
CHARLOTTE
And you believe that?
KATHY
Hey, I don’t have any right not
to believe her… If she says she
wasn’t doing any, then, I believe her.
CHARLOTTE
She is in so much trouble.. When
I get home, she is sooo grounded.
KATHY
Uh, yeah, sure Charlotte… Ya’ know..
Char… with all due respect… I don’t
think you have the right to ground
any of us.
CHARLOTTE
Watch me.
KATHY
I mean, we all dig the maternal
influence thing you got goin’ with
all of us, but grounding someone
is taking it a bit too far, don’t ya’ think?
CHARLOTTE
Yeah, yeah… So, what? She did coke
with this guy and he died of a
heart attack?
KATHY
That’s the prevailing theory…
At least, that’s what we all
convinced ourselves of… But,
Jane and I have our doubts.
CHARLOTTE
Oh, that’s right.. you and Miss
Marple have your doubts… And
what evidence leads you to
this conclusion?
KATHY
Well, for one thing, Belinda
denies the whole thing.
CHARLOTTE
(doubtful)
Uh-huh.
KATHY
Although…
CHARLOTTE
Although what?
KATHY
She blacked-out the whole evening.
CHARLOTTE
Oh!! She blacked-out the whole evening!
And you still believe she wasn’t
doing coke and drinkin’ like a fish?
KATHY
Hey! I believe in what she tells me!
Charlotte takes the time
to give Kathy a skeptical
and cynical look.
CHARLOTTE
Yeah… You are sort of
protective of her, aren’t you?
Why is that?
KATHY
She’s my best friend, that’s why.
CHARLOTTE
Oooh, best friend.. Sorry.
KATHY
You don’t have to be
jealous, Char.
CHARLOTTE
Oh, please.. Jealous?
KATHY
(inciting arousal)
I know you are.
CHARLOTTE
Gimme a break.
KATHY
I still believe her.
CHARLOTTE
I think you’re being
foolishly naive, Kathy.
KATHY
Fuck you, Charlotte.
Charlotte stares her down.
KATHY
You heard me… If you had seen
her that following morning… Crying..
pleading.. begging for us to believe
her… You would have believed her
too… You know, you got a lot of
nerve standing there and criticizing
me for my beliefs when you weren’t
even there! This has nothing to do
with friendship… This has to do with
trust.. and respect… Respect for someone
we love… Ya’ know, when are you gonna
get it through your thick skull that there’s
a body-double of you out there trying
to fuck up our lives and steal our money?
Huh? Doesn’t that make more sense?
Charlotte is chastised into
silence. She realizes her
mistake and apologizes.
CHARLOTTE
You’re right… I’m sorry…
I wasn’t there… I’m sorry, Kathy.
I was outta’ line.
KATHY
Yeah.. You’re damn right you were.
CHARLOTTE
Now what?
KATHY
I don’t know.. Where
were we?
CHARLOTTE
What makes you think he
didn’t die of a coke overdose?
KATHY
Well.. there wasn’t any real
evidence that he was even doing
any… I mean.. there wasn’t any
coke residue around his nostrils.
CHARLOTTE
That doesn’t mean anything…
Maybe he was just real tidy.
KATHY
Maybe… But his eyes were shut…
And he was lying face down
in the bed.
CHARLOTTE
His eyes were shut? What
does that mean?
KATHY
When people die from severe
heart seizure, their eyes are
usually open.
CHARLOTTE
Usually. Not always.
KATHY
True… But there was something
else that was real suspicious.
CHARLOTTE
Like what?
KATHY
The way he was lying face down
in the bed… His arms were spread
apart… but the sheets were pulled
up to his torso.
CHARLOTTE
So?
KATHY
I don’t know, Char… If you had
seen it… It looked like he was
placed that way… It was all too.. neat.
CHARLOTTE
Hmmm… I guess that makes
sense… Is that what the cops
believe? That he died of an overdose?
KATHY
Uh, well…
CHARLOTTE
Kath?
KATHY
About that…
CHARLOTTE
Omigod… Here we go again…
Are you about to tell me that
The Go-Go’s did something
monumentally stupid again?
KATHY
Well, like someone said in
the bedroom that morning —
I can’t remember who, specifically.
We wouldn’t be The Go-Go’s
if we didn’t do something stupid.
